It is cricket
In New Zealand it's rugby; in China it's table tennis; in USA it's basketball; in Germany it's the rush to get the best sun lounger and in the UK it's teenage binge drinking. But in SL the undisputed king of everyone's spare time, devotion and concern is cricket. Even the recent football World Cup lost air time to some regional cricket match and now that money..loads of it...is pouring into the India Premier League and 20/20 versions of the game I will find it impossible to see any of the 6 Nations.
The above pic is taken of the square just outside our house in the 350 year old Dutch Fort of Galle. The arches behind the trees in the background hide the High Court in which I have stood, before the Judge, on several occasions...although I will share those stories later. Mostly he has better things to do.
The square during the week is a car park for lawyers but after 4pm and at weekends it plays host to the Fort League. A collection of rival teams playing with a tennis ball, usually bare foot, for personal satisfaction and pleasure. It is competitive stuff. The picture shows left arm round the wicket. Fielders walking in....batsman poised.
